Transitioning New Nurses to Oncology Nurse Practice
The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Oncology Nurse Residency Program (ONRP) is a 12-month program that builds on the education and skills of new graduate nurses and prepares them to practice nursing in ambulatory oncology settings. The ONRP is a Practice to Transition Program (PTAP) Accredited with Distinction through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Residents are provided with mentorship and guidance throughout the program as they focus on developing critical reasoning in oncology, advancing their nursing skills, and increasing their comfort in providing nursing care for complex, diverse patient populations.
The Residency program works toward increasing diversity in the oncology nurse workforce at Dana-Farber by identifying nurses with experience in and commitment to working with diverse populations. Upon completion of this program, residents may apply for a permanent nursing position at Dana-Farber.
A residency gives you the time to transition into the nursing profession and provides support and mentorship throughout the year-long program. I felt prepared when I graduated from the program and confident in my practice. 
Nurse Residency Tracks
Infusion Specialty
Infusion nurses provide care and treatments to our patients in numerous ways, such as by administering appropriate chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy agents, depending on diagnosis. They support patients and their caregivers physically, emotionally, and socially. Infusion nurses are trained in venous access, medication administration, and recognizing infusion reactions. They also monitor patients during their time in clinic to ensure the patient is safe to return home.
Clinical Research Specialty
Clinical research nurses provide care for our patients who are participating in clinical trials. These nurses attend clinic visits with the patient's care team to ensure research-specific assessments are completed. The research nurse utilizes evidence-based nursing practice techniques and has expertise in developing and coordinating a plan of care designed to meet the physical, psychological, and social needs of cancer patients and their caregivers during participation in a clinical research trial.
How to Apply
New graduate nurses are encouraged to apply for the specialty that meets their professional goals. The Nurse Residency program begins in September of each year. The application window is open from March through early May.
Eligibility
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the start of the residency program
- Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to both oncology and health equity
