The new Dana-Farber outpatient pharmacy on Dana L1 will fill prescriptions for Dana-Farber patients and staff and accept all major health insurance plans. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about the pharmacy service.


General questions

What hours will the pharmacy be open?

Weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where is the pharmacy located?

On Dana L1, just past the cafeteria. Look for signage to guide the way.

Which prescription medications are available?

The pharmacy stocks all oral medicines prescribed by Dana-Farber physicians. For staff needs, it stocks all the most commonly prescribed medications — roughly the same supply as would be found at a community pharmacy.

Are over-the-counter medications available at the pharmacy?

No.

Do prescription slips have to be hand-delivered to the pharmacy?

Patients and staff must drop off their prescriptions at the pharmacy. Only healthcare providers can call or fax prescriptions in.

How long does it take to have prescription orders filled?

Times will vary depending on volume. Dana-Farber staff is advised to drop prescription orders off at the start of the workday for pickup in the afternoon.

Can patients and staff have prescription medications mailed to them at home?

Yes, but there may be a fee to ship.

Can someone not affiliated with Dana-Farber fill prescriptions here?

No. Only employees, their family members, and patients of Dana-Farber can have their prescriptions filled at the pharmacy.

Which insurance plans does the pharmacy accept?

All major plans are accepted.

Will the pharmacy accept insurance plans from patients from other parts of the country?

It is able to accept many different insurance plans, but not all of them.

Will I receive counsel and drug information like at my local pharmacy?

The right to counsel will be offered to anyone who has a prescription filled at the Dana-Farber pharmacy.

Will it be cheaper than my regular pharmacy?

The cost for prescriptions can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy. If an insurance card is used, the co-payment is generally the same as at any pharmacy.

Does the pharmacy serve pediatric as well as adult patients?

Yes.

Is the Dana-Farber pharmacy an option when refilling a prescription on the Patient Gateway?

Currently, individuals are asked to call the pharmacy to have prescriptions refilled. The pharmacy will look into making this an option in the future.

Providers

As a doctor, will this service create more work for me during an already packed office visit?

There should be no extra work for physicians. Physicians can fax in prescriptions through the LMR.

Staff

Can staff members call beforehand to learn if a certain medication is available at the pharmacy?

Yes.

Are pharmacy services available to part-time Dana-Farber staff and contract workers?

Yes.

What provisions are there to ensure the confidentiality of information pertaining to prescriptions for staff?

The privacy policy for Dana-Farber patients pertains to staff as well.
