For Lori Reda, RN, oncology nursing has long been a source of professional and personal reward. "I get enormous satisfaction from making a positive difference during a difficult time in a patient's life," says Reda.

Many of the patients on Reda's unit undergo bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and require a lengthy hospitalization. "After they go home, our patients continue to be at risk for developing an infection," explains Reda. "They need to modify many aspects of their lives to minimize that risk. While they are hospitalized, we teach them what they need to know in order to care for themselves at home."

Reda enjoys the time she spends with patients and families. "By caring for the same patients and families over time, we get to know them well and are able to anticipate what they need," she notes. "We almost become a part of the patient's family."
