Mohr's gift expands mobile mammography services and outreach into Lawrence, Mass., community

With a new gift supporting Dana-Farber's mobile mammography services in Lawrence, Mass., Cynthia Alekel Mohr is giving back to the diverse and underprivileged community that enriched her own life.

Since its inception in May 2002, Boston's Mammography Van has consistently increased its annual number of breast cancer screenings. Now this total will grow even larger thanks to a $100,000 gift to Dana-Farber from Cynthia Alekel Mohr establishing the Cynthia Alekel Mohr and Family Mobile Mammography Fund.

The fund will support the van's new services in the greater Lawrence, Mass., area and provide for staff expansion to focus on community partnerships and outreach efforts. Born and raised in Lawrence, Mohr is passionate about this opportunity to make a difference by providing critical resources to women who otherwise might be less likely to access them.

"Lawrence is a diverse community that has greatly enriched my life," said Mohr. "I believe in the future of this underprivileged community, and I am proud to be able to give back by promoting health care for women."

A collaborative effort between Dana-Farber and the city of Boston, the van is the only mobile mammography service in the commonwealth. Its primary aim is to provide breast cancer screenings and education to underserved and uninsured women. According to Dana-Farber's Karen Ruderman, MPH, MSW, the van's program director, the vehicle also serves as an important point of entry into the health care system.

"We are extremely grateful to Cynthia Alekel Mohr for her commitment, passion, and generosity," Ruderman stated. "Our successful collaboration with the Lawrence community will help women and their families achieve a higher level of overall well-being."
